Transportation and Bussing Information

The Lakeland Catholic School District operates a bus transportation service in conjunction with the Northern Lights School District (Bonnyville and Cold Lake areas) to provide service to over 2000 students every school day. In the Waskatenau area, the District contracts various independent carriers to provide services to the students who attend Holy Family Catholic School. Transportation services are free for those students who live outside a 2.4 km radius of the school attended. However, in-town busing is available for those who live within the 2.4 km radius at a yearly fee as set by transportation services.

Attendance Boundaries

The Division expects students to attend their local school if they require system transportation.

The Division shall establish attendance areas for transportation purposes and for effective use of school facilities.

The Division believes responsibility for busing students to and from the local school, within specific attendance boundaries, rests with the
Division. Therefore, the Division expects parents/guardians to provide their own transportation when students attend a school, other than their local school, outside their attendance area. There are exceptions where the educational needs of the student cannot be met in the local school.

Attendance Boundaries for the following communities:

Cold Lake and Bonnyville

Waskatenau- Contact Holy Family School or Lakeland District Office for registration and busing information.

What is School of Choice

School of Choice is when you choose to go to a school outside your regular attendance boundary and want to utilize system busing. The following procedures apply:

1. Permission to attend a school other than a student’s local school, outside the attendance area, shall be granted with the approval of
the Superintendent, or designate when:
• the educational needs of the student cannot be met in the local school, and
• the prospective and receiving school has appropriate and available accommodation

2. Once approved, in accordance with Section 51 (3) of the School Act, a School of Choice fee
will apply when:

a. The residence is on the current route or you’re willing to drive to the closest eligible stop. (Eligible stop means a bus
stop where a student resides within the designated school attendance boundary).
b. The school bus is transporting to the school your child attends. Due to safety concerns we will no longer accept students
getting off at one school and walking across main thoroughfares to get to their school of choice. There will be no
exceptions.
c. There is sufficient room available on the school bus. We must leave four (4) seats available for new eligible students moving
into the area.
d. The School of Choice fee must be paid in full before transportation is granted.

What is Schoo of Choice

Students who live in an urban area are considered “In-town” students.

If you reside under 2.4 km from the school your child attends, and you wish to use busing, you will be required to purchase a bus pass.

Please be advised 2.4 km from your residence to the school may differ from year to year depending on the growth of urban developments. Visit http://www.nlsdlcsdtransport.ca to determine eligibility.

Note: In-town busing is available on a first come, first served basis.

• the wind chill exceeds -50 degrees Celsius at 4 Wing or at Lac La Biche Airport
