Welcome to Lakeland Catholic Schools!

Message from the Chairperson of the Board

At Lakeland Catholic we are proud to offer you the choice of fully funded Catholic education. Our mandate goes well beyond teaching religious courses, we include the promotion of a world view and moral life that integrates and informs all parts of the curriculum. Within our schools, a holistic, inclusive and Christ-centered education is our main focus. While this focus ensures that the knowledge and skills expectations of Alberta Learning are met, it does so within a framework of the Catholic faith. As such, we teach our students much more than the skills for the workplace.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Lakeland Catholic Schools, I invite you to join our family and experience the difference – where Christ is our model, and children our focus.

Vicky Lefebvre
Chairperson of the Board of Trustees

Message from the Superintendent

Why Catholic Education? In essence, we provide education with a difference. We are different because parents, teachers, trustees, administrators and the entire Catholic community are involved in the vital mission of providing an education of the highest caliber that is permeated by the Catholic faith. We are different because we offer parents and children in our jurisdiction the opportunity to become part of a community of learners who are led by principals, teachers and staff members who have responded to a special calling and who are genuinely inspired to view each child as a precious gift and sacred responsibility.

Whether you are a teacher interested in bringing your career to our district or a parent looking for the best possible education for your child, I am confident that you will find Lakeland Catholic the place to be!

Bernadette Provost
Superintendent

Values and Beliefs

  • Each student is a unique gift from God to be valued and respected.
  • All children can learn and experience success in a quality learning environment.
  • All students, parents and staff have gifts and talents that must be recognized, respected and developed.
  • Catholic/Christian values are fundamental in preparing our students’ minds, bodies and spirits, and Christ should be reflected in everything that we do.
  • Learning is a visionary and proactive process that requires a collaborative effort by students, staff, families and the community.
  • Learning occurs best in a safe, orderly and caring environment where expectations are clear and students believe they can and will succeed.
  • Students learn differently and at their own pace and have the right to access high quality educational programming.
  • The Catholic school is an extension of the Catholic Christian community and is a vital link between church and home.

Faith in Education

“The Catholic School finds its true justification in the mission of the Church. It is based on an educational philosophy in which faith, culture and life are brought into harmony.”

This educational philosophy is the foundation of our work in Lakeland Catholic Schools. We celebrate our Catholic identity through our religion programs, prayer and liturgical celebrations but more importantly our faith permeates everything that we do.

In our Catholic schools, all students participate in Religious Education programs and the Alberta Learning curriculum is implemented within an overall religious perspective. The Gospel values permeate all dimensions of the learning process and this influences the way we view the world and each other as we seek to find God in all things. “There is in fact no delineation between religious and non-religious learning in a Catholic school. Instead, teachers focus on integrating the faith dimension into every subject area”

Our district and schools have adopted the following eight characteristics which define our Catholic identity and the faith dimension that permeates all learning: community, tradition, humanness, sacramentality, rationality, spirituality, justice,  and hospitality.

Each school has identified ways they live each of these eight characteristics of Catholic education. For example, the schools build Christian community and encourage staff and students to adopt a Christian way of life when they provide opportunities for them to serve the common good of society through works of justice and service.

One way the district lives its call to hospitality is to be inclusive of diverse peoples and perspectives.  We welcome families and students of different faiths and religions who choose our schools because they have come to appreciate our Christ-centered environment and the religious dimension, which permeates and enhanced all instruction.

We invite you to join our Catholic Family and experience education with a difference.

Jurisdictional Profile

The Lakeland Roman Catholic Separate School District No. 150 is located about 250 kilometers Northeast of Edmonton.  The two major urban communities in the jurisdiction are Bonnyville and Cold Lake.  Within these communities, the District operates six schools: Three in Bonnyville and three in Cold Lake, which all boast of offering dual-track programs (English and French Immersion).  The District has recently expanded to include parts of the Counties of Smoky Lake and Thorhild, and within this area, Lakeland Catholic opened a new school in the village of Waskatenau for the 2004-2005 school year.

The Lakeland region of northeastern Alberta has a rich multi-cultural identity, a reflection of its diverse settlement history.  The earliest inhabitants were aboriginal who were later joined (in the early 1900’s) by French-Canadian pioneers from Quebec, followed by a significant wave of Polish and Ukrainian immigration in the late 1920s.  In the early 1950s, the Federal Government developed an air force base (4 Wing Cold Lake) and town site and since then, the base staffing and rotational protocol has ensured a healthy influx of new residents from across Canada.

The regional economy is differentiated by locale. On aggregate, oil and gas production is the keystone of the regional economy. Bonnyville and Waskatenau derives the largest share of benefits from the agricultural sector while, 4 Wing Cold Lake plays a leading role in the economic health of the City of Cold Lake.

The Lakeland Catholic School District serve the needs of all students with equal intensity and look forward to new and on-going initiatives we will pursue in our Education Plan.  More specifically, Enhanced Literacy Programming (K-9), the implementation of new three-year Education Plans; the implementation of AISI (Alberta Initiative for School Improvement) projects; expanded CTS (Career Technology Studies) program offerings; enhanced collaborative planning and professional development opportunities for teachers, upgraded district facilities and full implementation of site-based decision-making.

As always, our Catholic Christian community remains strong as all members of our district and community work collaboratively to achieve personal and academic success for all.
